What do you need to rent a motorbike in Bangkok?

A motorcycle licence in the right class, an International Driving Permit if you are not Thai, and a deposit. What you should never be asked to hand over is your passport. NOIRR takes a refundable cash or card deposit and does not hold passports.

Do you need a licence, and what happens at a police checkpoint?

Yes. Every NOIRR bike is over 150cc, so a car licence or a car-only IDP does not cover it. A checkpoint stop is normally a document check, and it takes under a minute when the paperwork is right.

Is it safe to ride a motorbike in Bangkok traffic?

It is manageable once you know two things: Bangkok traffic runs on lane position rather than indicators, and the first ten minutes of a downpour are the slipperiest riding of the day. Most visitors who already ride somewhere else adjust within a few hours.

Motorcycles cannot use Bangkok's elevated expressways and tollways, so every ride stays on the surface network. Peak hours, roughly 7 to 9am and 5 to 8pm on Sukhumvit and Ratchadaphisek, are the hardest riding of the day on any bike. If you have not ridden in dense Southeast Asian traffic before, take the first half hour on quiet sois.

Which bike for Bangkok: scooter, maxi scooter or big bike?

The ADV350 is the sensible default: an automatic 330cc adventure scooter with real underseat storage and a tall screen. What does the insurance cover, and what does travel insurance usually exclude?

Third-party liability is included on every NOIRR rental and covers damage you cause to someone else's vehicle or property. It does not cover the bike itself or your own injuries. Many travel insurance policies limit or exclude motorbike cover, and a claim can be refused if you ride without the right licence class; the licence guide quotes insurers' own wording.

How do you avoid a damage deposit scam?

Get the deposit amount agreed in writing before you hand anything over, and get photographs of the bike's condition taken in front of you at both delivery and collection. A shop that skips the photos is the one that finds new damage on return that nobody agreed to. NOIRR photographs both sides of the bike at handover and again at collection, sends you the same photos, and returns the deposit in full when nothing has changed.

Delivery or a walk-in shop?

NOIRR has no shop counter. The bike comes to your address, the paperwork and deposit happen on your doorstep in under 15 minutes, and collection works the same way in reverse, including either airport. A walk-in shop saves nothing once you count the trip there and back, which usually costs an hour each way from a hotel outside the shop's own soi.

Can a tourist buy a motorbike in Thailand instead of renting?
