International Driving Permit Thailand: The Complete Guide for Motorcycles and Cars

Published 2026-05-27

What Thailand Requires

Thailand is a signatory to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. Under Thai law, any foreign national driving or riding a motor vehicle must carry two documents: a valid driving license from their home country, and an International Driving Permit (IDP) that covers the vehicle category they are operating. Neither document is sufficient alone. Both are required together at all times while driving.

This applies equally to renting a car, a motorcycle, or a scooter. If you rent a vehicle from NOIRR without a valid IDP, you are riding or driving without legal documentation. Your travel insurance will not cover you if something goes wrong.

Motorcycle vs Car: Different IDP Classes

This is where most tourists make an avoidable mistake. The IDP has separate categories for different vehicle types. Category A covers motorcycles. Category B covers cars. If your home-country license only covers cars, your IDP is a car-only document. It does not permit you to ride a motorcycle in Thailand, including scooters above 50cc.

Check your home driving license before you apply for an IDP. The endorsements on your IDP will mirror the categories on your national license. If you want to ride a motorcycle in Thailand, you need a motorcycle license at home first, then apply for an IDP that includes Category A. You cannot add a motorcycle category to your IDP if your home license does not already carry it.

How to Get an IDP: By Country

  • United Kingdom: Apply at a Post Office branch or via the AA or RAC. Bring your valid UK driving license. Cost: GBP 5.50. Issued same-day at most Post Office branches. Online applications take 1-2 weeks by post.
  • United States: Apply via AAA (American Automobile Association) or AATA (American Automobile Touring Alliance). Bring your valid US state driving license, two passport photos, and the application fee (approximately USD 25). Most offices issue same-day.
  • Australia: Apply via NRMA (NSW/ACT), RACQ (QLD), RACV (VIC), RAA (SA), RAC (WA), RACT (TAS), AANT (NT), or your state automobile club. Bring your valid Australian license and passport photos. Cost: approximately AUD 24-30. Issued same-day at most club offices.
  • European Union: Apply through your national automobile club. In Germany: ADAC. In France: AA, ACA. In the Netherlands: ANWB. In Belgium: Touring Mobilis or Royal Automobile Club de Belgique. Most are issued within 1-3 days. Cost: typically EUR 15-30.
  • Canada: Apply via CAA (Canadian Automobile Association) or BCAA. Cost: approximately CAD 25. Same-day or next-day issue.
  • Other countries: Contact your national automobile association. If no national automobile club exists, some countries issue IDPs through their national transport authority. Check before you travel.

The IDP is valid for one year from date of issue, or until your national license expires, whichever comes first. Apply close to your departure date so your IDP does not expire mid-trip.

What Happens at a Thai Police Checkpoint

Checkpoints on Bangkok expressways and at road junctions are more common since 2024. Police ask to see your license and IDP. Riding without a valid IDP: fine of 500 to 1,000 THB, issued on the spot. You may also have your vehicle impounded. The fine itself is small. The larger problem is that any incident without a valid IDP voids your travel insurance for everything that happens on that ride, including hospital bills.

Carry both your original national license and your IDP. Do not carry only copies. Police in Thailand require original documents. Keep your passport at your accommodation and carry a copy. This is different from your license and IDP, which must be originals.

1949 vs 1968 IDP: Which Does Thailand Accept

Thailand recognises the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP. Some countries issue the 1968 Vienna Convention IDP instead. Thailand does not formally recognise the 1968 IDP, though in practice some officers accept it. Do not rely on this. If your country issues both, apply specifically for the 1949 version. The UK, USA, and Australia all issue the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP, which is correct for Thailand.

Renting from NOIRR: What You Need Ready

NOIRR requires a valid IDP at the time of vehicle handover. For motorcycles (Ducati Monster 937, Kawasaki Z900, Yamaha XMAX 300, Honda ADV350): your IDP must include Category A (motorcycle endorsement). For cars (Tesla Model 3, Jaecoo 6 EV): your IDP must include the standard car category (Category B or equivalent).

NOIRR does not accept a car-only IDP for motorcycle rentals. There are no exceptions to this. Get the right IDP class before you travel. It takes one visit to your automobile club and costs under EUR 30 equivalent. It is the easiest thing to get wrong before a Bangkok trip and the most important thing to get right.

NOIRR is opening in Bangkok with a waitlist for first access. None of the fleet is on the road yet. Join the waitlist at noirr.co/booking. Once vehicles are live, your IDP is all you need to get moving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Bangkok?

Yes. Thailand requires both your home-country driving license and a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) to legally drive a rental vehicle. The IDP translates your license credentials into the standard international format recognised under the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic.

Do I need a special IDP to ride a motorcycle in Thailand?

Yes. Your IDP must include a motorcycle endorsement, typically called Category A. A car-only IDP (Category B) does not cover motorcycles or scooters above 50cc. To get a motorcycle IDP, your home-country driving license must already include a motorcycle class. Apply via your national automobile association before you travel.

Where do I get an International Driving Permit for Thailand?

From your national automobile association before you leave home. In the UK: the Post Office, AA, or RAC. In the USA: AAA. In Australia: NRMA or your state automobile club. In the EU: your national automobile club such as ADAC (Germany), ANWB (Netherlands), or Touring Mobilis (Belgium). Most associations issue IDPs same-day. Cost is typically EUR 15-30 equivalent.

Can I get an International Driving Permit after arriving in Thailand?

No. IDPs must be obtained in your home country before you travel. You cannot apply for one in Thailand. If you arrive without an IDP, you cannot legally drive or ride a rental vehicle. Apply at least one week before your departure to allow for postal delivery if you are not applying in person.

What happens if I ride a motorbike in Bangkok without an IDP?

Police can stop you at checkpoints and fine you 500-1,000 THB on the spot. More significantly, riding without a valid IDP voids your travel insurance. If you are in an accident, your insurer will not cover your medical bills or liability costs. The IDP is not a formality. It is the document that makes your travel insurance valid.
