Big Bike Riding in Bangkok: What You Need Before You Book
Published 2026-04-26
What "Big Bike" Means in Thailand
In Thai law and common usage, "big bike" refers to any motorcycle over 150cc. This includes everything from a Honda CB300 to a Ducati Monster 1299. In practice, the rental market uses the term to mean anything above 500cc. NOIRR's big bike category is the Kawasaki Z900 (948cc) and the Ducati Monster 937 (937cc).
Thailand has a separate regulatory category for these vehicles, and the license requirements are stricter than for scooters.
License Requirements
To ride a motorcycle over 150cc in Thailand as a foreign national, you need:
- A valid motorcycle license from your home country covering the engine class you intend to ride
- An International Driving Permit (IDP) with motorcycle endorsement (Category A)
These are both mandatory. Your home country license alone is not sufficient. A car-only IDP does not cover motorcycles. A scooter-class license from some countries may not cover bikes above a certain engine size. Check your home license carefully.
Thailand's tourist police have increased enforcement of IDP requirements in Bangkok and on major highways since 2024. Riding without the correct documents risks fines, vehicle impoundment, and full travel insurance voidance.
Riding Experience Required
NOIRR does not rent the Kawasaki Z900 or Ducati Monster to first-time or inexperienced riders. The practical minimum: at least two years of active riding on 600cc or equivalent. Comfortable in urban traffic. Familiar with high-power motorcycle braking and cornering.
If your experience is primarily scooters or lighter bikes, the Yamaha XMAX 300 or Honda ADV350 are the right starting point. Both deliver the Bangkok riding experience without the demands of a 900cc+ machine.
Expressway Access
Motorcycles are permitted on most Bangkok expressways. Specifically: the Don Mueang Tollway, the Sirat Expressway, the Chaloem Maha Nakhon Expressway, and the Outer Ring Road are all open to motorcycles. Some elevated inner-city sections have restrictions. At toll booths, motorcycles use the leftmost lane or dedicated motorcycle gate.
Expressway access is one of the main reasons to rent a big bike in Bangkok. The city below the expressways is slow. At 80-100km/h above it, with clear road ahead, the bikes come into their own.
Age Limit
Minimum age for big bike rental at NOIRR is 21. Riders under 25 are asked to provide documentation of riding experience at booking.
Gear
Bangkok is 32-38 degrees for most of the year. The full-leather argument is difficult to sustain. Practical gear for Bangkok big bike riding:
- Helmet: Full-face strongly preferred at speed. NOIRR provides one. Bring your own ECE-rated helmet if you have it.
- Jacket: Mesh textile with CE-rated armour in shoulders and elbows. Minimal, cool, protective.
- Gloves: Summer motorcycle gloves. Small sacrifice, significant protection in a low-side.
- Footwear: Motorcycle boots or at minimum ankle-covering leather shoes. On a Z900 or Monster at 100km/h, flip-flops are not a sensible choice.
